Sandra "Sandi" Hughes Worrel Hallstrom, 79, of South Padre Island, Texas, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
Born on December 6, 1946, in Long Branch, New Jersey, to Robert and Jane Hughes, Sandi was the eldest of three siblings. The family settled in the charming town of Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, where she spent her childhood exploring the woods and lakes, cheerleading for her high school team, and enjoying occasional trips to Manhattan.
Sandi excelled academically, attending Mount Holyoke College for one year before transferring to the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned her bachelor's degree in 1968. While at UT, she met her first love. The couple married shortly after graduation and moved to San Antonio, Texas, to begin their family and her career.
For the next 43 years in San Antonio, Sandi devoted herself to raising four accomplished sons while building a distinguished career in information technology. She volunteered actively at Trinity Baptist Church and Alamo City Christian Church, became a passionate fan of the San Antonio Spurs, and rose to the position of Chief Information Officer before retiring in 2011.
In retirement, Sandi followed her lifelong love of the ocean and relocated to South Padre Island. There, she found a welcoming church family at Island Baptist Church, where she met her true love, Mark Hallstrom. They married in 2014 and shared 12 joyful years together, filled with beachside living and unwavering devotion.
Throughout her life, Sandi pursued many passions. In her younger years, she was an avid reader, enthusiastic cheerleader, and women's league soccer player. In midlife, she grew deeply in her Christian faith, serving her churches and community with dedication and became a devoted Spurs fan. Later, she cherished daily beach walks and helped establish a local food pantry in South Padre Island.
