With heavy hearts, we report the passing of Nancy Fletcher's husband, David Shepherd, the improv genius who urged us all to be creative.

James Howell Short

Jim Short died September 30, 2017 in Alameda, CA at age 72 after a brief illness. He was born in San Francisco in 1945 to James Gilbert Short and Alice Howell Short. He moved to the Washington, D.C. area and then to Lakewood, Ohio where he graduated from Lakewood High School. He earned his undergraduate degree in economics from Harvard College, class of 1967, after which he served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged as a LT(jg) in 1969. Jim and Linda were married in Yokosuka, Japan, where his ship was home ported. Following his discharge, Jim and Linda moved to San Francisco then Palo Alto where Jim earned an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1972.

Jim was a career corporate banker, working for First National Bank of Boston, Crocker Bank, Wells Fargo Bank and Citigroup. Jim, Linda, son Allen and daughter Sarah lived in San Francisco (with a 2 year detour to Warlingham, England) and Piedmont. After retirement, Jim and Linda moved to Oakville in the Napa Valley, only a year ago returning to live in Alameda to be near their daughter, son-in-law Tony Hernandez and grandchildren Emma Victoria and Luciana Mae.

Jim enjoyed good friends, old and new, as well as food, wine and music. He never heard a good joke that he didn't pass on and he archived the really good ones! Jim was a member of Cercle de l'Union, the Bohemian Club and California Vintage Wine Society. Outdoor cooking was his hobby.

Jim is survived by his wife Linda, Allen, Sarah, and his granddaughters. He is also survived by his sister Catherine, of Kirkland, WA and his brother Gerald, of Westlake, OH.

We give our heartfelt sympathy to Gail Coleman on the loss of her husband, Ken Bruntel, last September.

Gail shares this with us, "My husband, Ken Bruntel, died last September, exactly 4 months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. (Both of my parents died of this dreadful disease, even more quickly.) We were only married for 6 years, but were together for 35 years. I never was a strong advocate of marriage as an institution, but we decided to get married when I retired, and I am so glad we did! Ken was a partner at Crowell & Moring law firm in Washington, specializing in government contracts and health law. In 2009 he received Crowell & Moring's 2009 George Bailey Public Service Award for helping low-income elderly citizens navigate the maze of new Medicare benefits, working with the Washington Legal Aid Society."
